Surf Term: Life on Campus

When our students wake up in Costa Rica for Surf Term, they are immediately greeted by a symphony of nature's finest sounds. The air is filled with the melodious chirping of various colorful birds, each adding its unique tune to the chorus. The playful calls of howler monkeys echo through the lush vegetation, creating a sense of wildness and adventure. A natural alarm clock immerses them in the beauty of Costa Rica's rich biodiversity. The waves are crashing against the shore just a stone's throw away, their rhythmic melody creating a soothing backdrop to the morning. The warm tropical breeze carries the scent of the ocean, awakening their senses and reminding them that they are in paradise. Upon waking, students put on their rashguard and sunscreen and head to the beach for an early morning surf session.
How the Day Starts in Costa Rica
As they go through the dense jungle towards the beach, every step unveils a kaleidoscope of colors. The vibrant green foliage stretches in all directions, providing a lush canopy overhead. The air is filled with the sweet fragrance of tropical blooms as flowers of every hue dot the landscape. Orchids, heliconias, hibiscus, and plumerias paint a picturesque scene with their brilliant reds, pinks, yellows, and oranges. It's as if nature has become an artist, creating a masterpiece for their senses.
Emerging from the jungle, catch the first glimpse of the breathtaking turquoise waters. The ocean invites them with open arms, its gentle waves crashing against the pristine white sand. The color of the water mesmerizes, resembling a painting that comes to life. It's a shade of blue that evokes tranquility and serenity - a true tropical paradise.
They waste no time grabbing a surfboard, eager to dive headfirst into this aquatic wonderland. The warm sand hugs their feet as they approach the shoreline, creating a comforting sensation that hints at the adventures ahead. With each step toward the water, the excitement builds, and feel the waves beckoning to join their rhythm.
As they paddle out into the turquoise expanse, the cool water envelops their body, instantly refreshing them. The clear visibility lets them witness the vibrant marine life below as colorful fish dart among coral reefs and sea turtles gracefully glide through the water. It's a surreal experience, humbled and in awe of nature's wonders.
Positioning on the board, waiting for the perfect wave. And as it forms on the horizon, begin to paddle, matching the rhythm of the ocean. The force of the wave propels forward, and feel an exhilarating rush while riding the crest. Become more attuned to the ocean's energy with each wave caught.
The Beauty of Life on Campus
Life on campus is a blend of structure, fun, and focus. Between two surf sessions a day (read more about surfing at Surf Term here), study hall, group meals, and community living, it’s safe to say our students are never bored! Upon arrival to Surf Term, our teenagers hand over their computers and cellphones and enter the joys of extended device-free living and connection. Instead of staring at one’s phone and social media platforms for hours, our students hang out in the common area reading books, playing cards, practicing on the balance board, and making memories together.
The teens at Surf Term grow to become very close and form unbreakable friendships. It’s inevitable when you spend 24/7 together! Divided by gender, the teens share bunk rooms, providing everyone with the valuable experience of living with roommates and sharing spaces! A skill and experience everyone would benefit from having before heading to college. Between the green gardens, proximity to the beach, and nice dorm rooms, Nosara Surf Hostel provides the perfect home base for Surf Term students to grow, be challenged, and make lifelong friendships.
Teens share their time connecting with each other between surfing together, working on group projects about the local beaches and rainforests, playing soccer on the beach with local kids, eating typical Tico (that’s how you say “Costa Rican”) food fare, and debating big questions in Book Club. They eat together, play together, and grow together from sunrise to sunset.
All of these experiences are held and supported by our amazing staff. Our team is made up of passionate, professional, and inspiring adults who use their backgrounds and expertise to create this once in a lifetime experience for the teens.
