What to Pack for Surf Term in Costa Rica

Get ready to catch some epic waves and immerse yourself in a world of adventure, culture, and learning! Whether you're an avid surfer or a complete beginner, packing the right essentials is crucial for making the most out of this unique educational program.

From sunscreen and rash guards to cultural curiosity and a thirst for knowledge, here are all the essentials needed to make your Surf Term experience unforgettable. Grab your board, and let's dive in!

Protective Gear for the Sun and Weather

When you're out on the waves, it's important to protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays. Our team will provide you with a good quality reef-safe sunscreen with a high SPF. We’ll make sure it’s water-resistant, too, so that it doesn’t wash off as soon as you hit the water! We ask that you only use the sunscreen that our team provides.

In addition to sunscreen, consider investing in a rash guard or surf shirt. These shirts are designed to provide extra protection against the sun and any potential scrapes or rashes from your board. They come in various styles and colors, so you can find one that suits your personal taste while keeping you safe.

Another essential piece of protective gear is a wide-brimmed hat or cap. Not only will it shield your face from direct sunlight, but it'll also keep those pesky UV rays away from your scalp.

Don't forget about protecting your eyes, too! A good pair of polarized sunglasses reduces glare and protects your eyes from harmful UV radiation reflecting off the water's surface.

Make sure you bring a rain jacket or a poncho, Costa Rica has a tropical climate and is known for sudden downpours. While Costa Rica boasts stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and diverse wildlife, it also experiences sporadic rain showers throughout the year. A rain jacket helps make sure you can keep exploring and enjoying outdoor activities, such as hiking, wildlife spotting, and visiting waterfalls, even during unexpected rain spells. Furthermore, wearing a rain jacket allows you to stay comfortable and dry, preventing potential discomfort or illness caused by prolonged exposure to moisture.

Toiletries

It's important to remember that taking care of your personal hygiene and health is just as crucial as catching those perfect waves. Packing the right toiletries can ensure a safe and comfortable experience throughout your adventure. Don't forget about oral hygiene, either! Pack toothpaste, toothbrushes, and dental floss. For our young ladies, don’t forget your feminine hygiene products.

A sturdy waterproof bag or pouch where you can safely store all these toiletries together without worrying about them getting wet or damaged. Lastly, don’t forget insect repellent to help keep pesky bugs at bay during your time in Costa Rica.

Academic Materials

Yep, it’s true! Even though you will be surfing twice a day, you’ll still have school! Be sure to pack your school materials.

Please Note: Your computer will be stored in a safe and secure location when you are not in Study Hall.
